Common Refrigeration Issues & How to solve them

Everyone nowadays has a fridge at home, and despite their ubiquity, they remain complicated beasts to understand. We tend to rely on them so much that even a few hours of malfunction can spoil weeks’ worth of food! To prevent this from happening, one of the best things you do is keep yourself informed about common refrigeration issues and how to solve them.

The most common refrigeration issues

Thankfully, our engineers at KES Facilities have a wealth of experience dealing with refrigeration issues, ranging from something as simple as a water buildup to more dangerous gas leaks. The issues that follow are the ones they run into the most, but if you come across anything else, don’t hesitate to call!

My fridge/freezer is too warm

Of course, the broadest problem also has the broadest range of issues that can cause it. It may be as simple as a misbehaving thermostat, which are notoriously sensitive; but it could also be a sealant issue, or worst case scenario, a refrigerant gas leak. While you may be able to test the thermostat and the door seals yourself (by trying to slide a £5 note through the door while it’s closed), a gas leak is a serious issue, and we recommend you contact a professional for it.

Unusual noises

Fridges and freezers are naturally noisy, but we get used to it. That’s why, when the familiar noise changes to something out of the ordinary, it may be a herald of common refrigeration issues.  An unusual noise may be the evaporator tray being askew, or worse, a sign of an impending compressor failure. The compressor is one of the most important and expensive parts of the fridge, and hiring someone to replace it might prove costly.

Water Build-up

Another annoyingly common refrigeration issue can be a build-up of water pooling at the bottom of your fridge. This is usually caused by the drain hole at the back (where the condensed water is meant to go) being blocked by dust or some other debris. You should be able to clean it yourself without too much hassle with a bit of cotton or some wire. No need to call an engineer for that one!

Other minor common refrigeration issues

You may also run into other minor issues that you can easily fix yourself. We mentioned a loose door seal earlier, but that is something you can fix yourself if you are willing to pull out the old one, buy a new seal from your manufacturer’s website, and install it. Similarly, if your fridge light has stopped working, your fridge’s manufacturer will be able to provide replacement parts, and they are easy enough to install yourself if you’re the least bit savvy.

If you run into any other issue, or simply want us to take care of the problem, give us a call! We’re always happy to help you.
